“This is a very strong knot”

PODCAST SYNOPSIS

Occasionally you get in a situation when you need to tie two dissimilar pieces of monofilament or fluorocarbon together. By dissimilar I mean 20 lb to 10 lb or in trout fishing it could be 2x to 4x. One might be much larger, and you could step down but you don’t have the right size. Or in tarpon fishing you might have a 10 pound line and want to put a 25 pound shock-tippet on there.

For these situations I like to use a knot that a I got out of Rob Fordyce’s Tarpon Book. Be sure to check out the book, but here are instructions and below see a video on how to tie it:

  1. Take the lighter line and double it over without a Bimini

  2. With the heavy line, do two turns, and the lighter line you will do 4-5 turns

  3. Then put the tag end back through and tie a blood knot there

  4. So you have 5 turns on one side and 2 turns on the other side.

This is a very strong line and works for trout fishing as well. As your leader gets shorter and shorter you frequently find yourself in situations where you need to tie a 2x leader to 4x.

(If you are not familiar with trout fishing, the “x” indicates the tippet size and 8x is the lightest and 0x is the heaviest)
