Roland Martin - Success In Fishing And Making His Parents Proud

See this content in the original post

Tom Rowland sits down with Roland Martin to discuss his successful fishing career and his story of where he came from. Roland talks about his history of losing his parents at a young age and how he recuperated from the tragedy. Roland Martin is a name synonymous with Bass Fishing, and he does not disappoint. I got to know Roland on a trip that I was doing at Bass Pro Shops. I found myself traveling with him for 3 days.  From the moment I started this podcast, I made a list of the most colorful people I know to be featured on the podcast and Roland Martin was right at the top of the list.

Roland made time out of his busy schedule to drive two hours to come see me and do this podcast.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Mike Iaconelli - Bassmaster Classic Champion

Mike Iaconelli is a professional Bass Fisherman from South Philly, now living in New Jersey. He's had a passion for fishing since childhood and has been competing in fishing tournaments since high school. Since that time, Mike has won, or come near winning almost every major award in tournament bass fishing, and is the only angler to have ever won the Bassmaster Classic, Bassmaster Angler of the Year and B.A.S.S. Nation Championship. Most notably the 2003 Bassmaster Classic and 2006 Angler-of-the-Year awards. Most recently Mike won the Bassmaster Open on the James River only a couple of weeks after this podcast was recorded.

I caught up with Mike at the Icast show this year and had a great conversation.  Mike’s path to the top was unconventional and he was not the typical Pro Bass Angler.  Experiencing early success, his momentum slowed as the reality of the difficulty of the life that a professional angler leads hit home.  Just before the 2003 Bassmaster Classic, Mike considered giving it all up and had even done the paperwork to go back to teaching.  He had qualified for the Bassmaster Classic and he expected it to be his last tournament.

A few days later Mike wins the biggest tournament is professional angling.  His life was forever changed and he began to develop a plan for how this would steer the rest of his life.  Today he is one of the most popular figures in the sport of Bass Fishing and it is safe to say that he has transcended the sport.  He has been featured in mainstream media, written books and had network television shows, all with the mission to get more people into the sport of fishing.

Bill Dance - America's Favorite Angler

Bill Dance, one of the world’s most famous fishermen, always planned to be a doctor like his father, grandfather and three other generations of Dances.

Then, driving home one night while enrolled in medical school in Memphis, Tenn., in the early 1960s, he came upon a horrific motorcycle crash. The grisly encounter changed his life.

“I was the first person on the scene,” Dance recalls. “It was very traumatic and it affected me deeply. At that moment I knew I didn’t want to be a doctor anymore.”

What did he want to be?

“Well,” says Dance in his down-home Southern drawl, “I’d always loved to fish.”

And fish he did. He began competing—and winning—in bass tournaments and landed a lure manufacturer for a sponsor. The sponsor encouraged Dance to start a TV show to help promote the product. Bill Dance Outdoors premiered on a Memphis ABC affiliate in 1968 and has been growing in popularity ever since. Today the show is televised nationwide and its host has achieved celebrity status among the nation’s 45 million anglers.

Shaw Grigsby - Mentor, Pro Bass Fisherman, Coach, And All Around Great Guy

This podcast has been a long time coming, as Shaw has been on my list since the inception of this show. He has been an incredible helper and coach in my life. My first television exposure was due to Shaw Grigsby and he really brought me into the industry. After a few years, we decided to launch a show and Shaw was incredibly encouraging and even let us borrow his crew. He really cut the learning curve a lot and I've been forever grateful for that.

After so many years Shaw has maintained that same level of teaching and encouragement with me and so many other people. He's truly and all-around great guy, I hope you enjoy this show with my long time friend, Shaw Grigsby.
