“I think I’m much happier to be alive. My wife says I’m a better person now and I think she’s right. It just makes me appreciate everything.”

-Matt Hughes

Podcast Synopsis

If you are on the UFC FIGHT PASS you need to check out the mini-documentary about Matt Hughes in the “25 Years In Short” series. The story describes the UFC Hall of Famer comeback from a nearly fatal accident in 2017. Certainly is worth a watch.

I have wanted to have Matt on the podcast and on the fishing show for a long time. His first fight in the UFC was in 1999, and he is my favorite fighter of all time. Matt defended his title 9 times.

I met Matt for the first time in 2010 and we have kept up some after that. Later I found a post on Instagram about him in a hospital and found that he was struck by a train. I commented after seeing him walk into the UFC with him all healed, that we should go on a fishing trip. He posted a comment right back and said “Fishing trip? I’m in”. After that we got him down to Hawks Cay and then had him sit down on the podcast. He was a huge inspiration to me before his accident, after the accident he is even more inspiring to me. He has recovered in a way that is really incredible.

We talked about his fighting life, how he got in the UFC, wrestling and the accident. Matt was open to talking about the accident and how it affected his life. It was really interesting to me to see how thankful and grateful Matt is today for virtually everything in his life, especially his wife and children.

I don’t know anybody who could survive a train accident other than someone like Matt Hughes. He has a wonderful sense of humor and a great attitude. I hope you enjoy this podcast as much as I do.
