“We rely on guides and anglers to show the positive, and why we have something worth protecting.”

- Capt. Daniel Andrews

Podcast Synopsis

Captains For Clean Water is an environmental organization started by Capt. Daniel Andrews and Capt. Chris Wittman.  Today, they are leading the charge to save the Everglades.

Daniel was a guide working 280 days a year, until his area was affected by runoff from the Caloosahatchee River in the middle of peak tourist season.  He had to cancel all trips and was completely out of work.  He had seen smaller events like this before, but this time he couldn't ignore it.  During this time, he realized he needed to do something about this issue and within a few days, Captains For Clean Water was born.

The organization has some incredible resources available for public education on their website www.captainsforcleanwater.org.  You can watch one below that will explain the problem that we are facing and understand it a little better.

Their Mission is simple:

Advancing education, awareness and scientifically supported solutions to restore and protect marine ecosystems and our way of life for future generations.

Fishing has a major economic impact on Florida, 10 BILLION DOLLARS a year, to be more specific.  Combine other industries that fishing impacts directly, and the financial number is staggering.  This has a major economic impact on the United States.  This issue doesn't just impact fishing guides and Captains in South Florida, it impacts real estate values, tourism not associated with fishing such as bird watching, jet ski rentals, restaurant and hospitality industries, and virtually every other business.  I would go so far as to say that the economic impact of not coming up with a solution can not be calculated.  Even at $10 Billion dollars a year, this issue impacts every single American.

Daniel explains that we do not have to recreate the wheel to fix this problem.  The solution is already out there and passed as the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan in 2000, but virtually nothing has been done since.

Captains For Clean Water is dedicated to making sure that the public is educated and that the policy makers are not allowed to kick the can farther down the road.

I hope you enjoy this podcast with Daniel and find time to go to www.captainsforcleanwater.org and familiarize yourself with this organization.  Become a member, join their email list, follow on social, buy a hat, watch the videos, and become educated on the problems; find a way to support them.

Thanks so much for checking this out.  This issue is super important and could possibly be the most important environmental stand we make in our lifetime.
