Capt. Benny Blanco is a professional fishing guide out of Miami, Florida who works 300 days a year. In addition to a heavy fishing schedule, Benny is also a husband and father to his three girls. If that wasn't enough to fill up his schedule, Benny finds himself on the front lines in the fight for the Everglades. Recently, he was the recipient of a conservation award given by Captains For Clean Water and Costa.
Many people have become aware of the water issues in South Florida. If you would like to get up to speed before listening to Benny, I suggest that you check out podcast #0012 with Capt. Within five minutes, you will have a pretty good understanding of the problems that the Everglades is facing today.
Benny has a different perspective on this fight than our previous guests who have discussed the issue. Depending on where you are located geographically, this issue can impact areas differently. Some areas have too much freshwater, while others are completely starved of the freshwater they need to sustain life and health. In other areas, some have freshwater inundation combined with high nutrients that create issues when they hit the warm ocean or Gulf waters. In Miami, Benny sees several issues, but the areas where he is fishing are the ones completely starved of the natural fresh water flow.
Benny loves the Everglades and has been fishing and exploring these waters for most of his life. He fights out of instinct to protect what he loves the most.
