Why I Wanted Mike On the Show

I have always been drawn to people who reach the top of their field and then start asking what it was all for. Mike Iaconelli won the Bassmaster Classic, but in this conversation he is focused on legacy — and I wanted to hear how a champion redefines success once he has won it all.

Putting Family Ahead of Fishing

Mike is direct that he is a family guy first. He talks about his wife and two daughters and how he works to make sure they know they come before any tournament. The honesty there is the part I keep thinking about. Listen to that part early in the episode.

Redefining Success After the Classic

Once you have won the biggest event in the sport, what is left to chase? Mike answers that question by pointing at impact rather than trophies. Worth hearing in his own words.

Conservation and the Next Generation

The Legacy He Actually Wants

Mike defines how he wants to be remembered, and it has nothing to do with wins. The way he lays it out is a good gut-check for anyone chasing something. Listen to that part of the episode.

Final Thoughts From Me

What stays with me is how clearly Mike has thought about the impact he wants to leave. He has the trophies, but he measures himself by his daughters, by young anglers, and by the health of the water.

If you have ever wondered what comes after you reach the goal, this conversation is a good one to sit with.

Note: this recording is shared with the CMS entry for EP 809, which carries near-identical summary/FAQ copy — flagged separately as a likely legacy content duplication between the two Webflow items.] Tom Rowland: What's going on, everybody? Welcome to the show today. We have an awesome show for you — one of my favorite guests of all time, you probably know him too. His name is Mike Iaconelli. He's a professional bass fisherman, and he has an incredible story that he told us on really one of the first podcasts that we did — it was probably within the first year that I was doing podcasts. So if you haven't heard that, it's interesting to go back and listen to his story — he made it to the very top of the bass world by a very unique path, not the path everybody else takes. I think Mike is doing as good a job as anybody creating events and tournaments and situations where kids — not only kids in places where people normally fish all the time, but places like urban environments, places where fishing isn't something that's going to be handed down — these kids probably aren't going to have the opportunity to go fishing if it were not for the Ike Foundation and what Mike's doing. So I think he's doing fantastic work, and it made for a really great conversation. I hope you'll enjoy this conversation with pro bass angler Mike Iaconelli. Mike Iaconelli: Everybody, I'm Mike Iaconelli. I'm a fish head, and this is the Tom Rowland podcast. Mike Iaconelli, how are you, man? Tom Rowland: How you doing? It's good, good to see you — good to be back on the program. Mike Iaconelli: I know, I've always — I really enjoyed our first interview, where it was kind of a chance encounter at iCAST, and then we just — I asked you if you wanna do a podcast, she said, well, sure, let's do it right now, and we went up to the room and got one of my favorite ones ever. You have such a great story, and dude, I'm a fan — I'm a fan of yours for so many reasons. You're like the people's champion — you came up through the Bass Federation to win the Bassmaster Classic, which is an incredible route, and it brings so many people behind you, right? And then what you're doing for kids fishing today is fantastic, and that's one of the things I wanted to have you on to talk about, with your Ike Foundation and so many other things you're doing. Tom Rowland: Well, I appreciate it, and it's reciprocal — I'm a fan of yours, Tom — you in the saltwater world, you're my hero. I'm actually, you know, a freshwater guy, but I'm a closet saltwater fisherman. So I like stuff that pulls back — I don't care if it's salt or fresh. But man, I've been lucky to have the opportunities I've had, and it's been great. At the end of the day I think about fishing every day — I feel like when I'm fishing I feel like I'm 15 again, even though my body's getting old and wearing away, but it keeps me young. [The conversation continues into family and legacy — Mike's advice to his own three kids to find something they love and pour everything into it, the work ethic he learned from his mother and his Uncle Don after his father passed away early, growing up the son of immigrants in blue-collar South Philadelphia, and — later in the episode — his Bassmaster Classic win, his conservation work, and his advice for young anglers, as reflected in the article above.
