“Absolutely beautiful, crystal clear waters, manatees, there were some dolphins. You see some southern stingers swimming by… Big schools of snook and I’m like “oh man… Oh! Wait! you’re not fishing your paddling…’.”

Podcast Synopsis

Mike Dunlap is a Firefighter and fishing guide who is preparing for the Everglades Challenge. He plans to do the event on a Standup Paddleboard. The Everglades Challenge is an unsupported, expedition style adventure race for kayaks, canoes, and small boats. The distance is roughly 300 nautical miles depending on your course selection. There is a time limit of 8 days or less. Your safety and well being are completely up to you. You can follow the Everglades Challenge HERE, and watch Mike through instagram @chesapeaketjam.

Mike’s first ever paddle board race was the ChattaJack 31 race - a 31 mile paddle board race that celebrates the effort a paddle athlete makes in the pursuit of distance endurance. Fueled with passion on the water, these individuals love to dig, testing their personal limits while completing this unique gorge course. After that race Mike went on to participate in the Everglades Challenge. Mike went on to take on the ChattaJack again shortly after we recorded this podcast and will be doing the Everglades Challenge again on March 6, 2020 (you can follow him HERE).

Mike also started a paddle board fishing guide company called Barefoot-Adventures; Get outside and explore nature. The company is a hybrid of Mike’s passions where he shares his love of fishing and paddle boarding with others and encourages stewardship of nature. As an outdoor enthusiast, Mike says Barefoot-Adventures is an attempt to role all of his passions into one company. He teaches things from scuba diving to fishing in Chesapeake Bay.
