Austin Shares His Story

Howdy Tom,

I just wanted to thank you for making so much knowledge readily available to the world. I felt that I had to send you this because I had almost sunk my boat in a log jam last Sunday. Had we gone down it would've been nothing short of tragedy, losing two people and two dogs to the raging river. Without going to far into details I was stuck in an abominable log jam on a flooded river and the stern was taking water fast. After eliminating the threat of taking water we were still in a very bad way.

It was only with the knowledge that I had gained in my living room, from my Roku TV, watching YOUR How-To videos on Waypoint while eating lunch just days earlier that helped us. I had practiced the bow line knot along with the screen until like you said, I "could do it in the dark". I had even practiced forming the knot in my hand loosely so as that I could toss the loop over a pylon and then pull it tight to form the knot in theory with one hand. (It does infact work fairly well) Amongst utter chaos I managed to proficiently tie and toss my loop around a log and pull us into a stable position and tie off.

After many other tricks, as well as tons of hard work we were able to make an emergency portage. Bottom line is, if it hadn't been for resources that you had made available I very well could not be typing this today. So thanks a ton Tom, what your doing is awesome and truly is making differences in the world.

Keep up the good work,
Austin Stephens.
