Physical Friday - Eliminate Paralysis by Analysis - Episode #652

Consistency is KING to progressing on your fitness journey but everyone has to start somewhere on the path. Many people get motivated to make changes but get stuck by overanalyzing what they need to do. Questions like “what diet should I be on?” “Should I lift weights or do yoga?” Or “How many days a week should I work out?” It goes on and on…

My advice, get up and take a walk while you are considering all these alternatives. Keep walking until you formulate a plan…or maybe you won’t have to.

How 2 Tuesday - Should You Practice Casting from a Skiff?- Episode #650

There are many ways you can make your guide happy… like bringing them lunch or something to drink or wiping your F#%!ing Feet…but nothing will make your guide happier than you being able to make a good cast from the boat. Not only could this result in you catching more fish at the end of the day but this also helps your guide to preserve his soul rather than watch you fail, shot after shot.

Great anglers dont often practice their casting when its time to fish, all of that work has been done off the water.

Control the controllable to be a better angler. Avoid missed shots, be attentive and put in the practice off the water preparing you to make the shot…sometimes it’s the only one you get.

Physical Friday - Comparison is the Thief of Joy - Episode #649

Comparison has often been called “the thief of joy” and I agree with that statement. Comparing yourself to a professional athlete probably isn’t going to get you very far, in fact, it might take you several steps back. The healthiest comparison to make is to where you were the day before. You can do that by tracking and recording your workouts and seeing the progress you have made. Personally, I use an app called “Beyond the Whiteboard” that helps me keep track of all my workouts and the Carbon Diet Coach for my food intake.

How 2 Tuesday - Slim Beauty vs. Two Turn Blood Knot - Episode #647

The knot wars return this week and at the request of a listener I have decided to put the Slim Beauty and Two Turn Blood Knot head to head. As always I’ll be testing these knots on a Next-Tech Force-tester to maintain consistency.

Both of these knots are used to eliminate a Bimini Twist from the leader to save time and make the leader much less visible.

One of the many keys of becoming a great angler is to control to controllable and there is no better example of this than properly preparing and managing your tackle. If you want to learn how to tie the knots mentioned in this video plus 40 other knots check out the Tom Rowland Knot Course on Waypoint.

Physical Friday- Training Around Injury - Episode #646

Injuries are an inconvenience that can and will happen if you train long enough. Many people and some doctors will recommend not working out during the recovery period but I feel strongly that is not the most beneficial to my own training and maybe yours too. Today I go over my own strategies to continue training around any injury that may happen. I’ll talk about why I feel it is important and ways that I have found to alter training to still allow for consistent exercise and improvements despite setbacks from injury.

How 2 Tuesday - Dealing with the Haters - Episode #644

While at ICAST, I had a young guide approach me and ask for some advice—how do you deal with people who are actively trying to put you and your business down? This could be at the dock, in the bait shop or fly shop or even on social media.

I have dealt with this throughout my career and did have some advice.

Do you fight back or take a different approach?

Physical Friday - The In-Remaining Time Workout Format - Episode #643

Many people simply get bored with the same workouts over and over and that leads to them becoming inconsistent and maybe even quitting all together. Being able to mix up routines, rep schemes and exercises can keep workouts more interesting and sometimes even more effective.

The “In-Remaining Time Format” is a format that uses a set time of work and a set time of rest. We can use 2 exercises with a set number of reps followed by a third exercise that we will get max reps in the remaining time.

We go over examples of a 24 total minute workout that incorporates high intensity, even HIGHER intensity and then a break.

I like these rep formats because they always manage to keep workouts fresh, which is a major part of the recipe for my success in fitness. These schemes are also highly effective with minimal equipment or when traveling to a hotel gym. If you have come up with a workout that uses this format, send it my way because I always love trying new ones out.

How 2 Tuesday- The Spider Hitch vs. The Bimini Twist - Double Line Knots - Episode #641

The Knot Wars continue with a battle between two important saltwater fishing knots, the spider hitch and the Bimini twist both used to double the line without losing strength.

Many think that the Bimini Twist is a difficult knot (it’s not) and look for an easier way. The Spider Hitch is easier to follow and today we will test it to see if it is as strong as the Bimini Twist. Properly managing your tackle and improving it is part of controlling the controllable, which is a key to becoming a great angler.
