Shane Reynolds: From Nat Geo to Shark-Filled Camera Drops
Shane Reynolds is one of those rare storytellers who’s lived multiple creative lives—television host, producer, underwater cameraman, explorer, musician—and somehow blended them into one unforgettable career.
I first discovered him through Instagram, where he drops 360 cameras under piers to reveal the wild world beneath the surface. But as I dug deeper, I realized Shane has decades of experience with Discovery Channel, Nat Geo, and the Travel Channel, plus his own adventure show, Shane Untamed.
In this episode of the Tom Rowland Podcast, we cover everything from surviving in the Guyana jungle to the future of filmmaking with 360 cameras.
Behind the Lens: A One-Man-Band Production Model
Shane started in the late 90s when high production meant big crews and big cameras. Instead, he took the opposite route—shooting, editing, and hosting his own shows. This one-man-band approach turned out to be the future of TV production.
Sharks, Bridges, and Camera Drops
What started as a simple experiment—dropping a 360 camera under a pier—turned into viral content. Shane shares how he’s captured tiger sharks, schools of redfish, and even freed a shark from a hook without knowing it.
Survival in the Jungle
One of the wildest stories Shane tells is his expedition to Guyana while filming Shane Untamed. A survival situation unfolded when his fixer vanished with all their money, leaving the crew to haul gear out of the jungle on foot.
Technology Changing Storytelling
We explore how 360 cameras, drones, and underwater rigs are changing filmmaking. Instead of “the guy with the eye” always being behind the camera, storytelling is moving more into the editing room.
Sharks & Ocean Health
We get real about shark populations—are they increasing, decreasing, or just shifting? Shane’s observations, combined with those of fishermen and scientists, paint a nuanced picture of the Gulf and beyond.
