Bouncer Smith - A Legendary Life Of Fishing

Capt. Bouncer Smith is a South Florida Legendary Captain who has worked from 5:00 AM to midnight almost every day since he was a kid.  His work ethic is impressive and so is his resume.  With many world records and tournament wins, he is also the recipient of the IGFA “Legendary Captains and Crews” award.  His list of accomplishments can be seen here, but other highlights include Billfish Foundation - John Rybovich Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015, and the Henry H. Hyman award for Commendable Public Service in recognizing, preserving and developing the economic importance of sportfishing opportunities in South Florida. Conservation and preservation are important to Bouncer, and he has won many tagging and conservation awards.

The legend of Bouncer Smith emanates from South Florida but travels the entire world.  To top any of his fishing achievements is his personality.  A master storyteller, Bouncer is captivating and interesting and there is no wonder as to why he has maintained a clientele who love and revere him.

I sat down with Bouncer at his condo in Miami and had an incredible conversation.  I hope you enjoy this podcast with a true legend.

Robert Trossett - 238 World Records, Leaving A Legacy And World Travel

Capt. Robert “RT” Trosset is a light-tackle fishing guide based out of Key West, Florida. Born and raised in East Central Florida and moving to Key West in 1974, Trosset quickly found a following among hardcore light-tackle anglers in the Miami Beach Rod and Reel Club, as well as serious world record chasers. To date, he’s led anglers to 238 IGFA records on light-tackle and fly.  RT was the first guide to lead anglers to over 100 records, and has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Gamefish Association (IGFA).

RT came to Key West in 1974 and began working at Kings Point Marina.  Bob Montgomery helped Trosset begin his career and soon, he was guiding alongside legendary guides like Jose Wejebe, Ralph Delph, Ken Harris and Bruce Cronin.

While the fishing in Key West can occupy a lifetime, RT has traveled extensively throughout the world for a host of species.  If any offshore guide has done it all, it could be argued that RT is the guy who has come closest to that distinction.

Peter Miller - Uncharted Waters

Peter Miller has done lots of stuff, you may know him from his TV show Bass2Billfish and now started Uncharted Waters with Peter Miller. In addition to that, Peter is also the 3 time World Sailfish Champion with his team The GetLit. Before that he was a male model. He is the only person I know who came to the ranks of a professional fisherman through being a male model. That is an interesting path so we definitely talked about that, as well we discussed his work ethic and how he got to where he is today.

Really enjoyed talking to Peter, he’s a great guy and he’s got a wonderful story. I hope you enjoy the podcast today and listening to Peter Miller - Uncharted Waters.

CA Richardson - Flats Class, Teaching, Family And Passion

CA Richardson is a professional angler who has been the host of a television show, Flats Class, for over 10 years. As a masterful teacher, CA has expanded his influence on South Florida anglers by collaborating with Salt Strong to offer online courses in various subjects. Tom Rowland and CA first became acquainted through the early days of the professional redfish tournaments. They fished against on another in the ESPN Redfish Cup and the IFA Redfish Tours.

Join us in the conversation, as we discuss the aftermath these tournaments have done for us, from career paths to sponsorships.

CA is definitely one of the good guys, and his loyal fanbase is testament to his dedication, passion, and true desire to help his fellow anglers.

Jako Lucas - Capt. Jack Productions

This week I had the chance to sit down with the legendary Jako Lucas. You may know him from his extensive guiding resume, or for creating some of the most insane films in the Fly Fishing Film Tour. In the episode, we talk about getting started in this crazy travel lifestyle, paying your dues as a guide, the similarities and differences between Giant Trevally and Jack Crevalle, and much more. Be sure to keep up with Jako’s crazy adventures by following him on Instagram @captjackproductions

George Poveromo - 20 Years of TV Shows, Seminars and Educating Anglers

This week I had the chance to sit down with the Legendary George Poveromo. George has been on television for 20 years now, hosting “George Poveromo’s World of Saltwater Fishing” which now airs on The Discovery Channel.George and I have a lot in common from the Television world, and he has some crazy stories. He shared one which was nearly his last. While fishing with Capt Nick Stanzyk, he was pulled in by a swordfish and thought he was going to lose his life. We share some other great stories including how he and his father used to go to the Marquesas Keys when he was just a kid and many more in this podcast, so be sure to listen all the way through to hear everything we talk about! Meko Glinton - Guiding Lefty Kreh, Liam Neeson, Michael Keaton, And More

Meko Glinton has a deep family heritage of guiding in the Bahamas. He has established a reputation as one of the best fishing guides down there at this time. Through his career, he has become the bonefish guide to the stars. Lefty Kreh, Liam Neeson, Michael Keaton, Tom Brokaw, and many more of the worlds most famous people have been clients and soon become friends of Meko. In this episode, I talk to Meko about his style of fishing and what factors in to his success. Meko tells many stories including one about the day that he got so lost on a charter that he ended up at a different Bahamian island. Carter Andrews - Obsessed

Carter Andrews is obsessed.  He is obsessed with fishing..all types of fishing.

Carter and I have a similar story and our paths have intersected many times over the last 30 years.  We both grew up in Tennessee which makes a career as a saltwater fisherman unlikely at best.  We both had the desire and followed that desire to end up in Jackson Hole, WY and guide for different and competing outfits.  From there, I went to Key West and Carter went to Crooked Island, Bahamas then to Panama.

We fished many tournaments together and competed against one another in big events like the ESPN Great Outdoor Games.  Today, our paths cross again in the television world.  Carter has two shows on television now.  The Obsession Of Carter Andrews and Legendary Catch.

Carter and I catch up, tell some old stories and I get to find out what he has been up to since the last time we saw one another.  If you are a fan of Carter, please forward this article or share the player above with a few of your friends.  Tag both @tom_rowland and @carterandrewsfishing on instagram and let us know that you listened to the show.

Capt's Scott Walker And Steve Rodger - Into The Blue

I got to sit down with the hosts of Into The Blue television, Scott Walker and Steve Rodger. We spent a good bit of time together, but after a few 12 hour fishing days, the last thing anyone wants to do is sit down and talk some more.  After some time, we were able to get it done.

We also got to have Jake Perry, who does our underwater filming, sit down with us and tell us about a swordfish that attacked him. If you know anything about swordfish, you know that they are no joke and Jake was very fortunate to come out of that situation unscathed.

We also heard about the origin stories of Into The Blue and how their fishing careers started as well as talking hurricanes, resilience, and the art of keeping an open mind.

Mark The Shark - The Darth Vader of Sport Fishing

I have followed Mark Quartiano who is better known as Mark The Shark for a couple of years.  To say that Mark is controversial is an understatement.  Mark seems to relish the role as the bad boy of Sportfishing and referred to himself as the Darth Vader of Sportfishing.  This was interesting to me because he also seems to have a lot of contrary opinions and actions to being the badboy.  For example, Mark has no problem killing big sharks and posting the pictures on Instagram, however after talking to him for a while I also learned that he has tagged and released more sharks than anyone in the world.  Many of the sharks are sent to biologists or delivered to the local homeless shelter.

I wanted to learn more about what made him tick so I took a chance and sent him a message.  To my surprise, he responded right away and we set up the podcast even though he didn't know what a podcast was.  When I met him at his iconic office in Miami it was literally jammed with shark jaws and pictures stacked 2 feet high of previous catches were all over his desk.  His office was like a museum and there was so much stuff  that it was impossible to take it all in.

Mark sat down and talked about anything I wanted to talk about and by the end of the conversation I knew way more about Mark the Shark than before.  I understood where he was coming from and I understood his motivations for what he does.  We discussed sharks, of course, his dislike of tournaments, water quality issues, family as well as many other subjects.  We may disagree on a few things but we also agree on probably way more.  In fact, by the end of the conversation I really liked Mark and respected his work ethic that has him working 450 trips a year…every year.

There is no doubt that this will be the most controversial podcast I have ever done, but I am very happy that I get a chance to talk to Mark and was very impressed with his willingness to do this interview and answer any questions I had.

Rufus Wakeman - Billfish, FADS, Adventure, and A Life Well Lived

Rufus Wakeman is a Florida Guide and has 10 World Records for both fly and conventional tackle. I talked to Rufus about his adventures, favorite fish, FADS and how he got where he is today.

Capt. Joe Gonzales - Fishing Miami and Biscayne Bay Since 1987

Whatever industry you may be in, it is common to hear of the legends.  Those people whose name continues to surface in conversations with other customers or competitors.  In the inshore fishing business, Capt Joe Gonzales is one of those people.  Despite working 150 miles away from one another, I heard Joe's name and stories on the regular.  His reputation precedes him as a professional who might actually have some Bonefish DNA mixed in with his.
