Wesley “Cabo Surf Caster” Brough: Mastering the Beaches of Baja
Wesley Brough has spent more than two decades fishing the rugged beaches of Baja, Mexico — and guiding clients from all over the world to bucket-list catches. Known online as Cabo Surf Caster, his videos of explosive topwater strikes, giant roosterfish, and mahi in the surf have become legendary in the saltwater fishing world.
In this episode, we cover Wesley’s full seasonal playbook, species behavior, lure tactics, and his philosophy on guiding, social media, and keeping Baja’s beach fishing alive.
From 10,000 People to Half a Million
Wesley grew up in a Cabo that was still a sleepy fishing village. Over the years, he’s watched it transform into a booming destination — bringing both opportunity and challenges for anglers. With resorts and private developments taking over beach access, finding the right spots has become an art form.
Baja’s Year-Round Calendar
January through April is Sierra mackerel season, mixed with smaller roosterfish and jacks. Late spring brings Pacific cubera snapper — aggressive, hard-fighting fish that crush stick baits in shallow water. By late May, the big roosterfish arrive, peaking into summer before mahi push blue water right to the sand in the fall.
Tactics and Tricks
From floating stick baits for Sierra mackerel to timing your cast for a “Godzilla mode” rooster, Wesley breaks down the small details that make a big difference — like why wire leaders spook fish in Cabo, or how needlefish can actually help you hook trophy roosters.
The 73-Pound Cubera Story
One of Wesley’s most jaw-dropping stories is about a 73-pound cubera snapper that smashed a surface lure in just six feet of water. The fight included drag-peeling runs, rock cutoffs, and finally surfing the fish in on a wave — only for the leader to break as it hit the rocks. What happened next? Wesley dove into the surf and wrestled it by hand.
Roosterfish: The Star of Cabo
Big or small, roosterfish are the number one target for most visiting anglers. Wesley shares why finding them is often harder than hooking them — and how patience, precision, and understanding bait behavior are key to success.
Social Media with Purpose
Wesley’s clips go viral for a reason: he focuses on the moments that make anglers’ hearts race — bait blowups, fish in the wave barrel, and slow-motion eats. That attention to detail has made his accounts a must-follow for saltwater anglers.
