The Tom Rowland Podcast covers a wide variety of subjects form learning the stories of how the legends like Bill Dance, Jimmy Houston, Shaw Grigsby, Mike Iaconelli and Roland Martin climbed to the top of the bass fishing world to how Peter Miller, RT Trosset, Bouncer Smith, David Mangum, Carter Andrews or CA Richardson became household names in the saltwater fishing world.  Stories of how young guides made it into the guiding profession or how other individuals defied the odds and figured out how to make a career out of things like hiking, sailing, YouTube, Patreon, writing or podcasting.  One thing holds true from all these stories and that is that each of these individuals had a mindset that allowed them to achieve the seemingly impossible.  They kept a positive attitude even during adversity and continued working until success was achieved.

Tom Rowland looks to many different type of individuals for guidance on mindset.  One group stands out more than others.  Top Military Special Operations soldiers are trained in mindset through their whole career.  These lessons are forged in the fire of battle where a mistake means your life.  There is no testing ground as rigorous as the battlefield.

We can learn valuable lessons from these individuals and apply them to every area of our lives and learn how to accomplish anything in your life.  With over 400 episodes of the Tom Rowland Podcast, it may be difficult to find those episodes specifically on mindset with military operators as guests.  Here is your cheat sheet to the top episodes on mindset from the Tom Rowland Podcast:

Nick Lavery - U.S. Green Beret Warrant Officer On Mindset And Why Motivation Is Overrated

This week I had the chance to sit down with Nick Lavery, a U.S. Green Beret Warrant Officer. On this Veterans Day we would like to honor and thank all veterans.  Nick Lavery (@machine.nc on Instagram) is a US Green Beret Warrant Officer who has earned three Purple Hearts, a Silver Star, a Bronze Star, and a Bronze Star with Valor, for heroism in combat. With an incredible story of perseverance after he suffered many injuries in battle, resulting in having his leg amputated above the knee, Nick overcame tremendous odds to be considered the first Green Beret to return to combat as an above the knee amputee. Through this experience, Nick gained a unique perspective and offers some incredible advice about life, perseverance, motivation, and work ethic that can benefit each of us. Be sure to listen to the full episode, because this one is packed with knowledge. And don’t forget to share this with someone who might find it interesting or helpful.

Chriss Smith - Trident Mindset

Chriss Smith is the co-founder and CEO of Trident Mindset. Chriss spent 12 years as a U.S. Navy SEAL, and is now a competitive ultra-endurance athlete and founder of business ventures in the leadership development, maritime rescue, and physical fitness fields.

I was fortunate enough to have Chriss as one of my instructors at SealFit Kokoro Class 30.  I learned a tremendous amount from him and the other instructors and I have been keeping up with them all since that event.  When I saw that Chriss launched his mindset training program called Trident Mindset, I knew that I had to get him on the podcast.

SealFit Kokoro is a difficult event that was a real life changer for me.  I learned more during those 50 hours than I had, in many ways, in my entire life.  I would suggest it for anyone, however I am cognizant that not everyone can afford the time that it takes to get physically prepared for an event like that.  Additionally, not everyone may find it interesting to be submerged in cold Pacific Ocean on a California beach at 4 am surrounded by Navy Seals that are quite adept at dishing out a physical beat down.  Trident Mindset offers many of the same lessons I learned in an audio format that is short and concise. Sergeant Major (r) Jamey Caldwell - 21 years in Special Operations, 500 Missions, 14 Deployments…And Pro Bass Fishing?

Sergeant Major (r) Jamey Caldwell, spent more than 21 years in the United States Army, serving his entire career in Special Operations. SGM Caldwell served 7 years with the 75th Ranger Regiment then spent the following 14 years in a Special Missions Unit that maintained a high operational tempo in Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan, and numerous other countries in the world. He has deployed to combat 14 times and has conducted well over 500 missions. SGM Caldwell has been awarded three medals for valorous actions in combat while under direct fire from the enemy. During his career, SGM Caldwell has consistently dedicated himself to the success of the mission and put the unit’s goals in front of his own. He has been sought after for his leadership skills, planning, leading combat operations, marksmanship, and CQB instruction, culminating from years of adaptive thinking in combat situations. Jamey is also the owner of 1 Minute Out a tactical training company.

While serving active duty, Jamey found time to get back into Bass fishing.  He joined a few bass clubs and participated in some tournaments.  Fishing for money, racing boats to the fish, and the other adrenaline that goes into that sport got him hooked and he saw a clear path to something he could do after the military.

Brad McLeod - Former Navy Seal Brad McLeod-Improve 1% Daily, Gratitude And Bringing Warrior Culture To Your Life For Success

Brad McLeod is a former Navy SEAL who runs SealgrinderPT.  Through his online platform, Brad is able to help athletes of all levels achieve their goals, whether completing BUDs and becoming an active duty Navy SEAL, or completing their first 5k.

Brad has a unique perspective to share, as his path to becoming a Navy SEAL included attending BUDs, completing Hell Week, but failing a math test that rolled him back into the fleet.  Finding himself disgusted with chipping paint off the Navy ships, while watching a platoon of active duty SEALS preparing for the upcoming mission, Brad doubled down on homework and body work.  He made sure that if he was able to get another chance at becoming a SEAL, he would make the best of it.

His chance came in the form of starting completely over from Day 1, and going through BUDs and Hell Week, this time completing everything successfully.  It is through these experiences and more that Brad has developed a “Never Quit” attitude that can help anyone in any field be more successful.
