HOW 2 TUESDAY - Picking The Right Fly Rod

In this week’s How 2 Tuesday, we talk about a question that I get very often, how to pick your first fly rod. I would divide this into two categories based on if you are fishing in freshwater or saltwater. If it’s freshwater. I would say to go with a 5wt. If you fish more saltwater, I would suggest a 9 or 10wt. In this episode we go into the reasoning behind that, so be sure to check it out! As always email me at podcast@saltwaterexperience.com or tag me on Instagram @tom_rowland with any How 2 Tuesday questions you may have, and I will try my best to answer them!

PHYSICAL FRIDAY - Farmer’s Walk To Build Grip, Forearm, Shoulder and Neck Strength

This week is all about the importance of grip strength in fishing. The farmer’s walk is an Old School exercise that has stood the test of time for a good reason…it works! It is just like it sounds, you basically take something that is heavy and walk around with it. Just like everything else I do, this one does not require anything expensive or only available in a gym. I fill up two 5 gallon buckets and take a few laps around my driveway. To make things harder, I also do this with heavy kettlebells. The Farmers Walk and Farmer’s Hold are not flashy or new. They are time tested and effective. Throw this into your workout a couple of times a week and I promise that you will be able to hold that cast net longer, pull the anchor faster, carry more ice, lift heavier coolers all without hurting your back. Plus, when we get back to shaking hands with each other you will crush people and make a great first impression. Just don’t break anyone’s hands. You will be COUNTRY STRONG! Email me at podcast@saltwaterexperience.com or tag me on Instagram @tom_rowland with any creative ways that you use the farmer’s carry.

PHYSICAL FRIDAY - Descending/Ascending Rep Scheme Workouts to Keep it Interesting

The ascending/descending workout is a great way to keep workouts interesting. I like to create workouts that have 2 parts. On the first part the reps will decrease each round and on the other part the reps will increase. You feel great knowing that your next set will be less reps on the first part but you are also building reps on the other side. Try a couple of the variations I discuss in this episode and Let me know ways that you use this workout. Tag me on Instagram @tom_rowland or by emailing me at podcast@saltwaterexperience.com. Monte Burke - Author Of Lords of the Fly - Homosassa FL Obsession Of Giant Tarpon

This week I sat down with Monte Burke to discuss his new book, Lords of the Fly. I was lucky enough to get an early copy of the book and give it a read before our interview. This book features some of my all time heroes and tells the incredible story of chasing after the world record tarpon in the late 70’s and early 80’s in Homosassa, Florida. Monte traces the history of Saltwater Flyfishing. This is an incredibly interesting story, featuring legends like Steve Huff, Dale Perez, Lefty Kreh, Chico Fernandez, Mark Sosin, Stu Apte, Tom Evans, Flip Pallot, Billy Pate, Ralph Delph, tom McGuane, Jim Harrison, Russell Chattem, Guy De La Valdene, Ted Williams, Andy Mill, and many others who were responsible for early innovation or obsessed with catching the world record tarpon on the fly. This story is full of friendships and rivalries, some even escalating to sinking boats, ruining marriages, and much more. Monte really dives into this in his book, interviewing many of these people to get the exact story. Monte has a background of working for Forbes, where he learned the best way to get accurate information, and he does a ton of digging to make sure that he got this wild story fully accurate.

PHYSICAL FRIDAY - Supplements

People always ask me what kind of supplements I am taking, and I really only take one. When I am out on the water or doing anything that will result in a lot of sweating, I always drink plenty of water, and I will add in a supplement to replenish my electrolytes. I take Hammer Endurolytes, but there are a number of alternatives. What’s most important is that you stay hydrated and are able to replenish your electrolytes during a hot day in the sun.

HOW 2 TUESDAY - Permit Fishing With A Live Crab - How to Hook a Live Crab, What Hooks to Use, Rods, Rigs

Permit are described as the hardest fish to catch on the flats. They are my favorite fish to catch and I fish for them more than any other fish. Im not sure that I agree that they are the hardest fish to catch after spending so much time with them. The most effective way to catch permit is with a live crab on spinning gear. The choice of hooks and how to hook the crab to keep it alive the longest can make a huge difference in how many fish you catch. On today’s show, I am on the water with my friend Capt Scott Brown and I show you exactly what hook to use, exactly how to hook the crab and exactly what rig I use. To show that it really works, I was able to catch one and release it too. These tips will help you catch more, I promise. Let me know if these tips help you by emailing me at podcast@saltwaterexperience.com or leaving a comment below.

PHYSICAL FRIDAY - The Ultimate Travel Workout

One of the hardest parts of traveling for me is staying in a consistent workout routine. The deck of cards is certainly not my idea and it is not a new idea, but one that I use all the time. I learned this from Ross Enamait (@Rosstraining) but athletes for many years have used a deck of cards to create all kinds of workouts. Ray Lewis is one of many famous and successful athletes who have used a deck of cards for years. The Deck not only gives you a great format to work out without a gym, but also will help to keep you motivated on a daily basis, because you already know what your workout will be. I go over some of my favorite variations of the Deck of Cards and how I use them but the possibilities are literally endless.
